The best Kraken alternative depends on what costs you most on Kraken. As of September 15, 2026, Kraken Pro charges 0.40% maker and 0.80% taker at its entry tier, while OKX lists 0.08% and 0.10% and Binance 0.10% both ways. For perpetual futures, Binance holds $31.6 billion in open interest, and EVEDEX charges 0.015% maker and 0.045% taker.

Kraken has earned trust over 15 years: CoinGecko gives it a trust score of 10, it lists 738 coins and it publishes proof-of-reserves reviews. Like any centralized exchange, it still holds client funds, a trade-off explained in our guide to custodial vs non-custodial wallets. The costs are what push active traders to compare. A new Kraken Pro user pays 0.80% on every market order until 30-day volume passes $2,500, Instant Buy adds a 1% fee on top of the spread, and Kraken's own fee schedule notes that futures are not available in every country. This guide compares five venues by spot fees at the entry tier, perpetual futures fees and size, identity checks and access, then explains where each alternative falls short. For more low-cost venues beyond this shortlist, see our ranking of the best low-fee crypto exchange options. The first row covers a different model: a perpetual futures exchange without spot trading, and our CEX vs DEX comparison explains how that model differs from a centralized exchange.

What Kraken's Fee Tiers Cost in Practice

Fee percentages look small until you multiply them. A trader who buys $1,000 of BTC with a market order and sells it later with another market order pays $16 in taker fees at Kraken Pro's entry tier. The same round trip costs $2 on OKX's global page, Binance or Bybit. Using Kraken Instant Buy instead of Kraken Pro adds a 1% fee on each side plus a spread that Kraken says varies with volatility, asset and order size, so the same trade can cost more than $20.

Crypto exchange fee and feature comparison

Kraken's tiers drop quickly with activity. Above $10,000 of monthly volume, Kraken Pro charges 0.22% maker and 0.38% taker; above $10 million, 0% maker and 0.10% taker. Kraken also counts futures volume and assets held on the platform toward those tiers. For a trader with a $50,000 balance, that can cut entry fees by more than half without trading more. Stablecoin and FX pairs have their own schedule, starting at 0.20% on both sides. Compare these tiers with your actual monthly volume before switching, and see our ranking of the best low-fee crypto exchange options for more venues.

On perpetual futures the gap is narrower. Kraken Futures, Binance and OKX all charge 0.02% maker and 0.05% taker at their entry tiers, and Bybit charges 0.055% taker. The larger difference is depth: Binance's derivatives open interest is about 80 times Kraken Futures', which matters for large orders.

Leverage on Kraken spot margin has its own cost. The fee schedule lists opening and rollover fees of 0.02% to 0.04% per four hours on many assets. A margin position held for one week passes through 42 rollover periods, which adds 0.84% to 1.68% of the position before any trading fee. Perpetual futures replace rollover with funding, which changes with market positioning and can be received as well as paid, so compare both before choosing a product for multi-day trades.

How to Choose a Kraken Replacement

  1. Where you live Access decides the shortlist: every venue restricts some countries, while perpetual-style futures are available through Coinbase Financial Markets.
  2. Spot or derivatives If you buy and hold coins, compare spot fees and withdrawal costs. If you trade price moves, compare perpetual fees, funding and open interest.
  3. Custody Every centralized exchange in this table holds client funds. Read our guide to custodial vs non-custodial wallets before leaving large balances on any platform.
  4. Track record Check enforcement actions and security incidents. Binance and OKX both pleaded guilty to US charges, and Bybit lost about $1.5 billion in 2025.
  5. Proof of reserves Kraken publishes reserve ratios with a June 30, 2026 review date. Look for a similarly recent report from any replacement.
  6. Asset list Kraken's 738 coins exceed most rivals. Confirm that your coins and fiat currencies are supported before moving funds.

Trading Perpetual Futures on EVEDEX

EVEDEX is not a like-for-like Kraken replacement: there is no spot trading, no built-in fiat withdrawal and no staking. It suits Kraken users who mainly trade price moves and are outside the countries it excludes. EVEDEX is a hybrid exchange for perpetual futures: orders are matched off-chain and settled on-chain on Arbitrum L2, with margin in USDT and a minimum deposit of 6 USDT. There is no traditional KYC; deposits pass AML screening, and external fiat partners may require verification. The 52 pairs include BTC, ETH, SOL, gold, silver, WTI oil, EURUSD and US stocks such as TSLA, all tradable 24/7. Fees are 0.015% maker and 0.045% taker, with cashback of up to 35% on your own trades. Leverage reaches 200x only on BTC-USD, ETH-USD and SOL-USD for positions up to $50,000 notional. Funding is calculated every eight hours and charged hourly. To see how it differs from a centralized exchange, compare CEX vs DEX models. Perpetual futures carry a high risk of loss.

FAQ

Kraken is a centralized cryptocurrency exchange founded in 2011 and based in the United States, offering spot trading, Instant Buy, staking and, outside some regions, futures. CoinGecko listed 738 coins and 1,475 spot pairs on Kraken on September 15, 2026, and Kraken Futures carried $389.6 million in open interest across 288 perpetual contracts.
Kraken is one of the longest-running crypto exchanges, operating since 2011, and it publishes proof-of-reserves reviews. Its June 30, 2026 review showed reserve ratios of 102.9% for BTC and 100.5% for ETH. As a custodial exchange, it still holds your funds, so enable two-factor authentication and withdraw long-term holdings to your own wallet.
Kraken is a legitimate exchange with a long operating record since 2011, a CoinGecko trust score of 10 out of 10 in September 2026, and published proof-of-reserves reviews that let clients verify their balances were included. Legitimacy does not remove costs: its entry-tier Kraken Pro fees are 0.40% maker and 0.80% taker.
Kraken lists more assets, with 738 coins on CoinGecko against 404 on Coinbase Exchange in September 2026, and its Instant Buy fee of 1% plus spread is simpler than Coinbase's spread plus a Coinbase fee of up to 1.875%, depending on payment method. Coinbase offers perpetual-style futures.
Kraken Futures trading starts with a verified Kraken account in an eligible country, because Kraken's fee schedule states futures are not available in every country. Transfer collateral to the futures wallet, choose a perpetual or dated contract, and trade at 0.02% maker and 0.05% taker at the entry tier.
Kraken Pro is free to use, but trades are not. At the entry tier, for under $2,500 of 30-day volume, Kraken Pro charges 0.40% maker and 0.80% taker on crypto spot pairs as of September 15, 2026. Fees fall with volume, reaching 0% maker and 0.10% taker above $10 million. Stablecoin pairs start at 0.20%.
Sending crypto from Kraken works through the Withdraw screen: choose the asset, add the destination wallet address and select the matching network, such as Ethereum or Solana. Kraken shows the withdrawal fee before you confirm with two-factor authentication. Send a small test amount first, because a wrong network can make funds unrecoverable.
Kraken is a centralized exchange: it holds customer deposits, verifies identities and matches orders on its own order books. Decentralized or hybrid venues such as Hyperliquid or EVEDEX let traders keep assets in wallets or settle on-chain instead. Kraken publishes proof-of-reserves reviews, most recently for June 30, 2026, to show client assets are backed.
At the entry tier on September 15, 2026, OKX's global fee page listed 0.08% maker and 0.10% taker for spot, while Binance and Bybit charged 0.10% on both sides. Kraken Pro charged 0.40% maker and 0.80% taker. For perpetual futures, Binance and OKX charged 0.02% maker and 0.05% taker.
