The Best Crypto App in 2026: Apps for Buying, Holding and Trading
Last Updated: September 15, 2026
The best crypto app depends on whether you want to buy, hold or trade. As of September 15, 2026, about 1.8 million App Store users rated Coinbase 4.7, Cash App sold bitcoin from $1 at fees of 0% to 2.0%, MetaMask charged a 0.875% swap fee, and EVEDEX offered 52 perpetual futures pairs at 0.015% maker.
"Crypto app" covers at least three different products. Custodial apps such as Coinbase, Cash App and Kraken let you buy coins with bank money and hold them in an account the company controls. Wallet apps such as MetaMask, Phantom and Trust Wallet keep the keys on your phone, so nobody can freeze your coins, and nobody can recover them if you lose the phrase, which makes knowing how to secure your seed phrase essential. Trading apps focus on order books and leveraged contracts, so read how perpetual futures work before using one. The right choice starts with the task, then fees, security and ratings. This guide compares seven apps across the three groups by best use, cost, ratings and documented drawbacks, then explains custody, real costs on a $1,000 transaction and the security steps that matter most, including how to split balances between hot and cold wallets.

Custodial Apps vs Wallet Apps
With a custodial app, the company holds the keys. You sign in with a password and two-factor authentication, and if you lose your phone, you recover the account through the company. The trade-off is that your coins depend on the company's security, solvency and rules. Coinbase disclosed in a May 2025 SEC filing that bribed support contractors had passed customer data, including government ID images, to a threat actor; no passwords or private keys were compromised, but the data made phishing more convincing.
With a wallet app, you hold the keys through a recovery phrase. Nobody can freeze the coins or lock the account, and nobody can help if the phrase is lost. MetaMask states that it cannot recover your wallet, Phantom says it does not store your recovery phrase, and Trust Wallet says there is no reset option. Before moving meaningful sums into any wallet app, learn how to secure your seed phrase.
Many people use both: a custodial app to buy with bank money, then a wallet app for coins they plan to hold. Cash App shows how the two connect. Bitcoin bought in the app stays in your Cash App account until you withdraw it to a third-party wallet, with a 0.001 BTC minimum for Standard withdrawals and 0.00005 BTC for Rush and Priority.
What Each App Costs on a $1,000 Transaction
The fee column becomes clearer on a single amount. For $1,000 on September 15, 2026:
- Cash App bitcoin purchase: $9 at the 0.9% tier that starts at $1,000, plus a spread of up to 0.75%.
- Kraken instant buy: $10 at 1%, plus any spread Kraken keeps; a custom order costs $15 at 1.5%.
- MetaMask swap: $8.75 at 0.875%, plus Ethereum or layer 2 gas.
- Phantom swap: $8.50 at 0.85% on pairs where the fee applies, plus Solana network fees.
- Trust Wallet swap: no Trust Wallet service fee, but third-party provider fees and gas vary by route.
- Coinbase simple buy: shown only on the order preview, because the spread and fee vary.
- EVEDEX perpetual trade: $0.15 as a maker or $0.45 as a taker per side on $1,000 of position value; no coins change hands.
The comparison has limits. A wallet swap exchanges one token for another, a Cash App purchase converts dollars into bitcoin, and an EVEDEX trade opens a leveraged contract. They solve different problems, which is why the task should come before the fee.
Security Steps for Any Crypto App
- Download from the official listing Check the developer name and the rating count. A copy of MetaMask or Phantom with a few hundred ratings is a warning sign.
- Replace SMS codes Coinbase uses SMS as its default two-step method but calls it the least secure option and supports passkeys and security keys; Kraken recommends passkeys.
- Slow down withdrawals Coinbase's allowlist makes new addresses usable only after 48 hours, and Kraken's Global Settings Lock blocks new withdrawal addresses even if your password is stolen.
- Keep recovery phrases offline Never type a phrase into a website, a chat or a support form. No legitimate app support team asks for it.
- Split balances by purpose Keep spending amounts in a hot wallet or custodial app and long-term holdings in cold storage; our comparison of hot and cold wallets explains the options.
- Treat wallet swaps as trades Check the token contract, the quoted fee and the price impact before confirming, especially on new tokens.
Where EVEDEX Fits Among Crypto Apps
EVEDEX is a hybrid perpetual futures exchange, not a place to buy or store coins. Orders are matched off-chain and settled on-chain on Arbitrum L2, and every one of its 52 pairs is a perpetual contract margined in USDT: 39 crypto pairs plus TSLA, COIN, MSTR, CRCL and SPCX shares, Tether Gold, silver, WTI oil, EUR/USD, USD/JPY, an SPY contract and two pre-IPO markets, all traded 24/7. Fees are 0.015% maker and 0.045% taker, funding is calculated every 8 hours and charged hourly, and the minimum deposit is 6 USDT. The 200x maximum applies only to BTC-USD, ETH-USD and SOL-USD, and only while a position stays at or below $50,000 notional. There is no traditional KYC, but deposits pass AML screening. Funded Trading works on the web only, P2P and Copy Trading are not launched, and there is no spot market. Before using any leveraged product, read how perpetual futures work. Perpetual futures carry a high risk of loss.
